Micro and nanoparticles

 

Nanoparticles possess several advantages in comparison to large particles which allow enhanced forms of drugs to be produced.

Many drugs when produced in nanoparticulate form will exhibit one or more of the following advantages:

A reduction in particle size generates a corresponding increase in surface area. A size reduction form a ‘standard’ 5 µm particle to 0.2 µm nanoparticles will increase the nominal surface area by a factor of 25. A larger surface area creates a greater possibility for dissolution in a solvent, which can lead to significantly increased dissolution rates.
