A reduction in particle size generates a corresponding increase in surface area. A size reduction form a ‘standard’ 5 µm particle to 0.2 µm nanoparticles will increase the nominal surface area by a factor of 25. A larger surface area creates a greater possibility for dissolution in a solvent, which can lead to significantly increased dissolution rates.
